Set up an app for two-factor authentication
If you log in to Sigma using a username and password, you receive two-factor codes sent to your email address. If you want, you can set up an app for two-factor authentication instead.
Using an app for two-factor authentication can be more reliable than receiving codes to your email address, and provide a true second factor by requiring you to access a separate device, such as your smartphone, or application to generate the two-factor authentication code.
If you do not have an app set up for two-factor authentication, or if you ask your admin to reset your authenticator app setup in Sigma, you receive two-factor codes to the email address you use to log in to Sigma.
Requirements
If you use a username and password to log in to Sigma directly, you can set up an app for two-factor authentication.
You must have an app installed on a device that you can use to generate two-factor authentication codes. For example, a smartphone with Okta Verify, Duo Mobile, Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, or a similar app installed.
Set up an app for two-factor authentication
To set up an authenticator app for two-factor authentication:
- In the Sigma header, click your user avatar and select Profile.
- In the Authentication section, click Enroll app for the Set up authenticator app option.
- Open the authenticator app on your smartphone and scan the QR code or click Show secret (
) to show the secret that you can use as a setup key, then enter the key in your app.
- In Sigma, enter the 6 digit code generated by your authenticator app.
- Click Verify to complete the setup.
After setting up an authenticator app, you're prompted to enter a code each time you log in to Sigma. Whenever you log in, you can still choose to get a code sent to your email address instead.
Turn off app-based two-factor authentication
If you lost your device with an authenticator app installed or need to set up a new one, or otherwise want to stop using an authenticator app for two-factor codes, you can turn off your authenticator app. If you turn off app-based two-factor authentication, you instead receive two-factor codes to your email address.
To turn off app-based two-factor authentication:
- In the Sigma header, click your user avatar and select Profile.
- For the Set up authenticator app option, click Disable.
- When prompted, click Disable.
You can also ask an admin to do this for you. For admin instructions, see Reset two-factor authenticator app.
