Use the Sigma plugin for ChatGPT

The Sigma plugin allows you to use natural language to interact with your Sigma organization from ChatGPT and Codex. The plugin connects you to the same tools available in the Sigma MCP server, so you can search for data sources in your organization, explore and describe their contents, and analyze your data without leaving ChatGPT or Codex. In addition, the plugin bundles a set of skills maintained by Sigma, along with the ability to build workbooks.

Use the Sigma plugin when you want easy access to your Sigma data from ChatGPT as well as the ability to build Sigma workbooks so you can save and share your analysis later. To install a read-only connector without the ability to build workbooks, follow the steps to Set up the Sigma MCP server in ChatGPT.

Sigma publishes this plugin as open source under the Apache License Version 2.0. Review the plugin license notice before installing or using this Sigma plugin.

User requirements

  • You must be assigned a Sigma account type with the Use Sigma MCP with OAuth permission enabled.

  • You must be assigned a Sigma account type with the permissions to perform the same operation in the Sigma UI:

    • Depending on the type of data source you want to use, you need the View connections, View data models, and/or View workbooks permissions enabled on your account type.
    • To create workbooks, you must be assigned an account type with the Create, edit, and publish workbooks permission enabled.
      • To edit existing workbooks, you must also have Can edit access to the workbook you want to edit.
    • To search, explore, or query a specific document, you must be granted at least Can view access to the document.
    • To search, explore, or query a specific connection, you must be granted at least Can use access to the connection.

  • If your organization has an IP allowlist enabled, you must allowlist the IP addresses your AI assistant uses for outbound connections, with a Scope set to API. For ChatGPT, consult the OpenAI documentation for the list of required IP addresses.

Limitations

  • The Sigma plugin cannot create data models.
  • The Sigma plugin cannot create workbooks in a shared folder, even if you have Can edit access to the folder. You can only create workbooks in the Your documents folder.
  • Some workbook features are not available to the plugin when it creates or edits a workbook. For example, the plugin cannot share a workbook, restore a previous version of the workbook, edit a tagged version of a workbook, configure exports, or delete a workbook.

Install the Sigma plugin in ChatGPT

The Sigma plugin is published in the ChatGPT plugin marketplace. Installing the plugin adds the Sigma tools and the bundled agent skills together, so you don’t need to configure a connection manually.

OpenAI requests a URL for the plugin during installation. To identify the appropriate plugin URL for your organization, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the Sigma home page.

  2. In the top right corner of Sigma, click your user icon.

  3. Select Profile.

  4. Select Integrations.

  5. Copy the Sigma MCP URL for your organization.

  6. Replace the v2 at the end of the URL with build. For example:

    https://api.sigmacomputing.com/mcp/build

Authentication

The Sigma plugin authenticates to Sigma using OAuth. You don’t need to configure anything beyond logging in to your Sigma account when prompted. The plugin inherits the permissions of your existing Sigma account.

The Sigma plugin supports the following features for interacting with Sigma from an AI assistant:

Search, explore, and analyze your data

With the Sigma plugin, the assistant can locate a data source, compose a query, and return results to you in the chat interface.

To perform these tasks, the Sigma plugin uses a connection to the Sigma MCP server, established when you install the plugin and authenticate to your Sigma organization. The plugin uses the same permissions as your Sigma account, so you can only access data sources and documents that you have permission to view.

Build workbooks

Describe the workbook you want, and the plugin creates it in your Sigma organization. The assistant locates a data source, creates a workbook, and returns a link to the new workbook so you can review and continue building in Sigma.

Example prompts include:

  • “Build a Sigma workbook that tracks monthly sales by region from the Sales data model.”
  • “In Sigma, create a workbook with a bar chart of the top 10 customers by revenue.”
  • “Add a page to the Regional Sales workbook in Sigma with a KPI for year-over-year growth.”

Using the plugin, you can create new workbooks and edit existing workbooks that you have access to. Created workbooks are saved in the Your documents folder in Sigma.
