Enable write access on a connection table (Beta)
This documentation describes one or more public beta features that are in development. Beta features are subject to quick, iterative changes; therefore the current user experience in the Sigma service can differ from the information provided in this page.
This page should not be considered official published documentation until Sigma removes this notice and the beta flag on the corresponding feature(s) in the Sigma service. For the full beta feature disclaimer, see Beta features.
When a table already exists in your data platform and you want to make it editable in Sigma, you can enable write access on it through the data catalog. Enabling write access turns the connection table into a Sigma table that you can edit and reuse across workbooks, and Sigma writes all edits back to the underlying database table in your data platform.
This page explains how to enable write access on an existing connection table. For general information about Sigma tables and how they work, see Sigma tables overview. To create a new Sigma table from an input table instead, see Create a Sigma table from an input table.
Sigma tables are currently supported by Snowflake, Databricks, and PostgreSQL connections.
Requirements
The ability to enable write access on an existing connection table requires the following:
- The table you want to make editable must meet the following criteria:
- It must be on a Snowflake connection with write access enabled and access configured for organization-wide Sigma tables.
- It must have an existing primary key configured.
- You must be assigned the Admin account type.
Enable write access on a connection table
Enable write access on a connection table to make the underlying database table editable in Sigma.
-
Use one of the following methods to view the database table in the data catalog:
- From Home:
- Go to the Connections page and select the relevant connection.
- In the data catalog, open the connection table you want to make editable.
- From a workbook:
- Select a table element that uses the connection table as the data source.
- Open the Properties panel to view the data source.
- In the Data source section, click the down arrow (
) next to the connection table’s name, then select View table in the menu.
- From Home:
-
In the connection table view, select the Access tab and turn on the Allow write access toggle.
The connection table is now a Sigma table that continues to be available in the data catalog. Workbooks can use the table as a data source, and Sigma writes all edits back to the underlying database table in your data platform.
