Configure chat history

The use of AI features is subject to the following disclaimer.

To allow users to view, resume, rename, and delete their own recent chats with Sigma Assistant and agents, enable chat history for your organization.

Chat history applies to the following features:

You can also choose where to store chat history and, depending on the storage method, how long recent chats are retained. If you don’t want users to access and manage their recent chats, you can disable chat history entirely.

Requirements

To configure chat history for your organization:

  • You must be assigned the Admin account type.
  • To store chat history in a Sigma-owned cloud storage bucket, your organization must grant Storage Rights to Sigma for AI Input and Output under the MSA that governs your use of the Sigma service. If your organization allows partial or no data storage, you cannot use Sigma-owned storage, but you can store Chat History data in a customer-owned bucket.
  • To store chat history in a customer-owned bucket (Beta), your organization must have an external storage integration configured appropriately for chat history.

Limitations and considerations

  • You can configure chat history to be stored by Sigma, or you can use a customer-owned bucket through an external storage integration for more control over data governance and compliance requirements.
    • When chat history is stored by Sigma:
      • Sigma stores chat data in a Sigma-owned cloud storage bucket and lists recent chats for 30, 60, or 90 days after inactivity. You cannot set any other custom retention period or retain chats indefinitely.
      • Retention is based on chat inactivity. When a chat has no user activity (the user hasn’t sent new messages or renamed the chat) for the selected number of days, Sigma deletes it from cloud storage, and it’s no longer included in the user’s recent chats list. When a user resumes a chat or renames it, the retention period is reset, and Sigma retains it until it remains inactive for the full 30, 60, or 90 days.
    • When chat history is stored in a customer-owned bucket (Beta):
      • You cannot choose a retention period in your organization settings.
      • You can only select a storage integration that uses a bucket in the same cloud provider and region as your Sigma organization. If your organization is deployed on Azure, however, the region doesn’t need to match.
    • You cannot switch between Sigma and customer-owned storage after you’ve enabled and configured chat history.
  • Chat history is user-specific. A user can only access and manage their own recent chats with Sigma Assistant and agents.
  • Chat history for Sigma agents is also specific to workbook versions and the individual chat elements where users interact with the agents. For example, a chat that occurs in the published version of a workbook is not included in the chat history for the same chat element in a tagged version of that workbook, and vice versa.
    • If a user deletes a chat element that an agent is attached to, its list of recent chats is no longer available since recent chats with an agent are accessed within the chat element. However, if a user restores a workbook version saved before the chat element was deleted, recent chats within the configured retention period are also restored.

Configure chat history

To configure chat history for your organization, enable the feature and choose where to store chat data, or disable chat history entirely.

Enable and store chat history in Sigma-owned storage

If your organization grants storage rights to Sigma (see Requirements), you can configure chat history to be stored by Sigma.

  1. Go to Administration > AI settings, then open the Assistant tab.
  2. In the Chat history section, select Edit.
  3. Turn on the Chat history toggle.
  4. For Storage bucket type, select Sigma-owned.
  5. For Store on Sigma for, select the number of days Sigma stores and lists inactive chats (30, 60, or 90).
  6. Select Save.

Enable and store chat history in a customer-owned bucket

This documentation describes one or more public beta features that are in development. Beta features are subject to quick, iterative changes; therefore the current user experience in the Sigma service can differ from the information provided in this page.

This page should not be considered official published documentation until Sigma removes this notice and the beta flag on the corresponding feature(s) in the Sigma service. For the full beta feature disclaimer, see Beta features.

If your organization requires storage control to meet data governance and compliance requirements, you can configure chat history to be stored in a customer-owned bucket through an external storage integration.

  1. Go to Administration > AI settings, then open the Assistant tab.

  2. In the Chat history section, select Edit.

  3. Turn on the Chat history toggle.

  4. For Storage bucket type, select Customer-owned.

The Storage integration field shows the existing external storage integration as the chat history storage destination.

  5. Select Save.

Disable chat history

If chat history is already enabled, you can disable it to stop storing chats for your organization and prevent users from accessing and managing their recent chats with Sigma Assistant and agents.

Chats that occur before you disable chat history remain in storage. If stored by Sigma, chats are deleted from storage after they’ve been inactive for the previously selected retention period.

  1. Go to Administration > AI settings, then open the Assistant tab.
  2. In the Chat history section, select Edit.
  3. Turn off the Chat history toggle.
  4. Select Save.
