Requirements
- To create drill control, you must have Can Edit access to the workbook.
Create a Drill Control
Before you start: This action is only available in Edit mode. To begin editing, click Edit in the top right corner of the page. Learn more
- In the editor panel's sidebar, click the + icon.
This will open the ADD NEW panel. - Under CONTROL ELEMENTS select your desired control element type.
Your new element will appear on the page. - In the editor panel, under Value source, use the dropdown list to select a data element containing the columns that you intend to use in your drill path.
If the selected data element supports drill downs, a column will automatically be added under DRILL CATEGORIES. - Click the + icon button to the right of DRILL CATEGORIES.
Then select a column from the list. - Repeat the step above to add any additional columns to your drill path.
The element will display the path accordingly. - Next you will need to add targets to your control. Targets are data elements that a control manipulates.
Open the Targets tab. - Click + Add Target.
Then select a target element from the list. - A box representing your target element will appear. Here you can map your drill path columns (aka DRILL CATEGORIES) to the corresponding columns in the target element.
Use the drop down menus to map columns. - Repeat steps 7 & 8 to add additional targets.
- Ready to test it? Click a category name in the control element’s drill path to drill into that category. Your target element(s) should update accordingly.
Create a Drill Control from an Existing Drill Path
Before you start:

To create a drill control from an existing drill path:
- Right click a value in the visualization to open its content menu.
- Under the Drill up sub-menu, click Create Drill Control.
Add Categories to an Existing Drill Control
Before you start: This action is only available in Edit mode. To begin editing, click Edit in the top right corner of the page. Learn more
- Select the existing drill down control.
- Click the + icon button to the right of DRILL CATEGORIES.
Then select a column from the list.
Note: The + button will only be enabled if a Value source is selected above. - Repeat the step above to add any additional columns to your drill path.
The element will display the path accordingly.
Add Targets to an Existing Drill Control

- Select the existing drill down control.
- In the editor panel, click the Targets tab.
- Click + Add Target.
Then select a target element from the list. - A box representing your target element will appear. Here you can map your drill path columns (aka DRILL CATEGORIES) to the corresponding columns in the target element.
Use the drop down menus to map columns. - Repeat steps 7 & 8 to add additional targets.
- Ready to test it? Click a category name in the control element’s drill path to drill into that category. Your new target element(s) should update accordingly.
