Upgrade workbooks from legacy layouts to grid layouts

🚧

The classic or legacy workbook layout is deprecated. On March 3, 2026, editing of workbooks with legacy (non-grid) layouts will be disabled. On June 2, 2026, this functionality will reach end of support and will no longer be available. You must upgrade workbooks to grid layout.

Workbooks that are not manually upgraded to grid layout by the end-of-support date will be automatically upgraded when the workbook is opened. Misalignment with exports and embeds can occur.

Requirements

To upgrade a workbook to grid layout, you must be granted Can edit access to the workbook.

Upgrade considerations

Consider the following before upgrading a workbook to grid layout:

  • Elements in grid layout might be sized differently than in legacy layout.
  • If PDF exports are configured for the workbook, the element size differences (caused by the upgrade) can lead to shifts in page breaks used to format PDF layouts. To readjust page breaks, see Configure additional options for exports.

Upgrade a workbook to grid layout

Upgrade a workbook to begin using grid layout.

  1. Open the workbook and click Edit in the header.
  2. Use one of the following methods to upgrade the workbook:
    • When Sigma displays the Upgrade to grid layout modal, click Upgrade.
    • In the side panel, click Workbook settings (available when no element is selected), then click Upgrade to new layout.
  3. Review the upgraded workbook and edit it as needed to correct any changes to page breaks, element size, etc.

Identify workbooks that might need to be upgraded

To identify workbooks that might need to be upgraded from legacy layouts to grid layouts, you can contact your Sigma Account Executive for a list.

If you want to estimate how many workbooks might be affected, you can identify workbooks that were last updated or created before grid layouts were introduced:

  1. Call the List workbooks GET /v2/workbooks endpoint.
  2. Review the updatedAt and createdAt values to identify workbooks created before October 17, 2023, especially those that were last updated prior to that date.
  3. For each potential workbook, follow the steps to upgrade a workbook to grid layout.
