What's new in Sigma
AI
Agents can set control values when run automatically or by API
When an agent has a Set control value action tool configured, it now sets the control when run as an automated action, by API, or by MCP server. The control value is set only while the agent is running. For more details, see Create actions that interact with agents.
Override filter and control values in Sigma MCP server queries
When querying and analyzing data, the Sigma MCP server provides context to your AI assistant about filters and controls that impact the results of your query. Using this information, the AI assistant can inform you about filters and override them at your request. For more information, see Use the Sigma MCP server.
API
Connect an AI assistant to the Sigma MCP server using an API key (Beta)
You can connect an AI assistant that doesn’t support OAuth to the Sigma MCP server by authenticating with an API key or access token. For more information, see Use the Sigma MCP server.
Custom element names in the code representation of a workbook (Beta)
Custom element names are now supported in the code representation of a workbook. For more information on retrieving, creating, or updating a workbook from a code representation, see Manage workbooks as code.
Omit workbook table styles from exports
The following endpoints now include an ignoreWorkbookFormatting option. Set it to true to omit workbook table styles from Excel and Google Sheets exports.
- Export a workbook (
POST /v2/workbooks/{workbookId}/send) - Add workbook schedule (
POST /v2/workbooks/{workbookId}/schedules) - Update a workbook schedule (
PATCH /v2/workbooks/{workbookId}/schedules/{scheduleId})
Schedule report email bursts through the API (Beta)
The Add report schedule (POST /v2/reports/{reportId}/schedules) and Update a report schedule (PATCH /v2/reports/{reportId}/schedules/{scheduleId}) endpoints now support scheduling report email bursts.
Split exports by list values controls and send each export to a shared recipient list or to recipients resolved from a report table. Email bursts aren’t available for trial organizations.
Admin
Allow users with a Build license to run workbooks as a service account
The Run workbooks as service account account type permission is now available to allow workbook owners to run queries for their workbooks with the connection service account instead of each user’s OAuth credentials. The permission requires a Build license. For more details, see Account type permission availability matrix.
If an OAuth connection has no service account configured, queries on that connection fail. For more information, see Run a workbook with service account credentials.
Connect to MotherDuck (Beta)
Sigma now supports connections to MotherDuck.
For more information, see Connect to MotherDuck (Beta).
New model used for Amazon Bedrock AI provider
If you use Amazon Bedrock as your AI provider, Sigma now uses Claude Sonnet 5 as the LLM.
For more details, see Supported AI models.
Sigma CLI v1.3.0
You can upgrade Sigma CLI to v1.3.0 by running brew upgrade sigma-computing-cli. The following changes are available after updating:
- If
SIGMA_BASE_URL,SIGMA_CLIENT_IDandSIGMA_CLIENT_SECRETare set in your shell, they no longer silently override the profile you pick with-p. They still apply over your default profile and when no profile is saved. sigma auth statusnow shows the source of your credentials.sigma auth login -p NAMEre-authenticates the stored profile instead of checking environment variables.- The
sigma api schemaandsigma api list-prefixescommands no longer require credentials. - Updated the TLS and async libraries to pick up published fixes.
- Building the Sigma CLI from source now requires Rust 1.89+.
For more information, see Sigma CLI.
Functions and calculations
Structured arrays (GA)
You can create structured arrays that are aware of the data type of their contents. This allows for accurate type checking and lets you use values from an array without converting their data type. For more information, see Create structured arrays.
Performance
Schedule materializations for workbook elements (GA)
Scheduling materialization for elements in workbooks is now generally available.
For more information about how to use materialization schedules to improve performance, see About materialization and Schedule materialization for a data model or workbook.
Workbook elements
Grid lines preserved in Google Sheet and Excel exports
Grid line table style settings are now preserved in exports to Google Sheets and Excel formatted exports.
See Grid lines.
Workbook features
Dynamic file naming for all export destinations (Beta)
You can now name individual attachments in exports, as well as use dynamic text in these file names.
See Send or schedule workbook exports for steps for each export destination.
Ignore table style formatting in Google Sheets and Excel exports
By default, workbook exports to Google Sheets and Excel formatted exports to other destinations preserve the table styling you have configured in your workbook. If you want the exported tables to have no styling, use the Ignore workbook formatting option available in the export modal.
Swap data model sources for an agent
When you tag a workbook version that contains an agent, you can now swap the data models used as sources by the agent. For more details, see Tag a workbook, data model, or report version.
Bug fixes and improvements
-
Added guidance to help Sigma agents resolve errors so that agents use action tools more effectively.
-
Deleted agents now show on the Agents page in Administration.
-
Previously, valid OpenAPI 3.1.0 specifications could fail to resolve when creating an API connector from an OpenAPI specification. Now, they resolve and can be used to import and select endpoints for an API connector in Sigma.
-
Tenants created in aws-ch: AWS Switzerland (Zurich), aws-in: AWS India (Mumbai), or gcp-uk: GCP UK were instead created in the same region as the parent organization.
-
Users in a securely embedded workbook now see a modal to Update your saved view, letting users fix custom view conflicts.
